COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) History degree offers a comprehensive exploration of historical themes, events, and debates across Britain, Ireland, Asia, Europe, and the USA. In the first year, students are introduced to the foundations of historical study through modules such as Humanities in Context and The Nature and Challenges of Historical Enquiry, developing key analytical and research skills. They also examine industrialisation, national identity, and the emergence of nation-states from the 19th to early 20th centuries. The second year builds on these foundations with a focus on modern global history, including the rise and fall of the Cold War, transformations in Britain and Ireland, and a hands-on Community History Project that strengthens practical research and engagement skills. Students also explore debates in modern British and Irish history while refining their understanding of historical methodology through a dedicated research methods module. In the final year, students undertake an independent dissertation on a chosen topic, demonstrating advanced research and critical thinking. Optional modules offer opportunities to study post-Cold War developments, cultural change, oral history, and global political transitions. The program provides a rich and varied perspective on history while preparing students for research, education, heritage, or public service careers.
