COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) English Language and Linguistics course provides students with a comprehensive understanding of language structure, use, and its role in society, combining theoretical study with practical application. In the first year, students engage with foundational concepts through compulsory modules including reading texts, writing for professional practice, discourse analysis, and sentence, meaning and context. These modules develop critical thinking and analytical skills, alongside an understanding of how language shapes identity and communication. Optional modules such as exploring form and genre, story shapes, language variation, and language and gender allow students to tailor their studies and explore specific interests. The second year builds on this foundation, with compulsory modules covering research methods, text and discourse, and employability skills in English, equipping students to conduct independent research and analyze language in real-world contexts. Optional modules offer further flexibility, including writing adaptations, reading and writing the short story, and system and structure. In the final year, students focus on advanced topics with compulsory modules in theoretical and applied approaches to language and a dissertation project, allowing them to conduct in-depth independent research. Optional modules such as advanced creative writing, clinical linguistics and language pathology, and English in education provide opportunities to specialise and prepare for careers in education, communication, research, or language-related professions.
