COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) English and Creative Writing course provides a comprehensive foundation in literature and creative practice, guiding students through the study of texts, genres, and writing techniques across different periods and styles. In the first year, students develop essential skills in storytelling, drama, structure, and plot, while exploring form and genre, sentence construction, meaning, context, and discourse analysis. Optional modules allow for a focus on literary landscapes, language, gender, and identity. In the second year, the course builds on these skills with modules on reading and writing short stories, adaptations, and fairy tales, alongside literary and cultural studies, covering movements from the Romantics to the Decadents and examining Gothic literature in both literary and visual contexts. Students also engage with employability and research-focused modules, equipping them with practical professional skills. The final year emphasises advanced creative and academic work, including a dissertation and modules in creative writing, modern and contemporary literature, science fiction and fantasy, and theoretical and applied approaches to language. Throughout the course, students refine their analytical, critical, and creative abilities, learning to communicate effectively and develop their unique voice. This combination of rigorous literary study and creative exploration prepares graduates for careers in writing, publishing, media, and related fields, or for further postgraduate study.
