COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Criminology and Criminal Justice program provides students with a thorough understanding of crime, criminal behaviour, and the justice system, combining theoretical knowledge with practical skills. In Year 1, students develop foundational insights through compulsory modules such as Looking Beyond Crime and Criminology, Skills, Research and Employability, The History of Criminal Justice, Crime and Morality, Key Approaches in Criminology, and Criminal Justice in Action. These modules introduce core concepts in criminology, the historical and moral dimensions of crime, and practical skills for research and employability. Year 2 focuses on research methods, policing, and the penal system with modules including Research Methods and Theory 1 and 2, Understanding Policing and Security, Youth Justice, and Punishment and the Penal System, while optional modules such as Violence Against Women and Girls, Drugs, Crime and Society, and Work Placement allow students to explore specific areas and gain practical experience. In Year 3, students consolidate their learning through advanced study and independent research in modules such as Dissertation, Diversity, Crime and Justice, and Crimes of the Powerful, with optional modules including Human Trafficking, Gender, Crime and Justice, and Prison and Society. Throughout the course, students develop analytical, critical thinking, and communication skills, preparing graduates for careers in law enforcement, criminal justice, policy, research, probation, and related fields, as well as for further postgraduate study.
