COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Chinese Studies program provides an immersive study of Chinese language, culture, and society, equipping students with linguistic proficiency and cultural literacy. In Year 1, students build a foundation through modules such as The Shaping of the Asia Pacific, East Asian Popular Culture, Background to China, and Beginners Chinese, introducing the historical, social, and cultural contexts of the region while developing basic Mandarin skills. Optional modules such as Humanities in Context or Social Science in Context allow students to broaden their academic perspectives. Year 2 focuses on advancing language ability and cultural understanding through modules including Cultural Transformations and Cross-Cultural Encounters in the Asia Pacific, Taiwan in the Asia Pacific, Aspects of Chinese Society, Chinese Language and Society, and Intermediate Chinese: Literacy, with optional modules like Employability and Global Citizenship or Research Methods enhancing professional and analytical skills. In Year 3, students engage in advanced study and independent research through compulsory modules such as International Relations of the Asia Pacific, Sustainable Development in the Asia Pacific Region, a Dissertation, and a Translation Project. Optional modules such as Chinese Language 3, Understanding Chinese Economy and Society, or Chinese Language Studies allow further specialization. Throughout the course, students develop critical thinking, research abilities, and cross-cultural competence, preparing them for careers in international business, diplomacy, translation, education, or further postgraduate study, with a strong command of Mandarin and deep insight into Chinese society and the wider Asia Pacific region.
