ABOUT UNIVERSITY
The University of Lancashire, based in Preston, England, is a public university with origins dating back to 1828 when it was founded as The Institution for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge by Joseph Livesey’s Temperance Society. Over time, the institution underwent several transformations, becoming Harris Art College, Preston Polytechnic, and later Lancashire Polytechnic, before gaining full university status in 1992 as the University of Central Lancashire. In December 2024, the Office for Students approved its name change to the University of Lancashire, which will officially take effect by September 2025. The university’s growth was fueled by endowments from local lawyer Edmund Robert Harris in the late 19th century, leading to the construction of the Victoria Jubilee Technical School on Corporation Street, designed by Henry Cheers and notable for being fully powered by electricity. Throughout the 20th century, the institution evolved in both scope and reputation, emphasizing technical and professional education. The Harris Art College became Harris College in 1952 and later expanded into a polytechnic before achieving university status. The university has a rich history in journalism education, launching one of the UK’s earliest journalism programs in 1962 and becoming a pioneer in journalism undergraduate degrees by 1991. In the 21st century, it has continued to innovate, forming partnerships such as the 2012 Gamma Programme with BAE Systems and other northern universities to develop autonomous technologies for various industries. In 2013, the School of Medicine and Dentistry was formed through a merger of existing medical and dental departments. Despite controversy over its new name due to confusion with Lancaster University, the institution’s rebranding reflects its commitment to regional identity, institutional independence, and competitive academic development, continuing its nearly two-century legacy of educational progress and innovation.
