COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Infectious Diseases at Kent provides a comprehensive and practical understanding of pathogens, their biology, and the global impact of infectious diseases. In the first year, students study molecular biology and genome editing techniques, gaining hands-on experience with cutting-edge methods such as CRISPR-based sequencing. They explore the biology of global pathogens, including their mechanisms of survival, transmission, and pathogenesis, and examine contemporary issues in infections, outbreaks, and antimicrobial resistance. The course emphasizes the ethical, societal, and research implications of infectious diseases, providing training in research design, data analysis, and advanced laboratory skills. Students also learn about pathogen diagnosis, therapeutic strategies, and vaccine development, developing the knowledge required to tackle pressing global health challenges. In the second year, students undertake a substantial research project, applying the skills and knowledge gained to a focused area of study. This project allows them to design experiments, conduct analyses, and interpret results under the guidance of internationally recognised researchers. Graduates emerge with practical expertise, research experience, and a deep understanding of infectious diseases, equipping them for careers in laboratory research, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, public health policy, or further academic study such as a PhD.
