COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA in Modern History offers a structured and comprehensive approach to studying the past, combining theoretical understanding with practical research skills. Core modules such as Reading the Past Part 1 and Part 2 guide students in critically engaging with historical sources, developing the ability to interpret documents, texts, and other evidence with scholarly rigour. Modules like Violence in Modern History and Power in Modern History explore key themes, encouraging students to analyse social, political, and cultural dynamics that have shaped historical events and experiences. Public Histories examines the ways history is presented, communicated, and interpreted in society, fostering an understanding of the broader impact of historical scholarship. Becoming an Independent Researcher equips students with the tools to conduct autonomous and rigorous investigations, while the Dissertation provides an opportunity to pursue an extended piece of original research, synthesising knowledge gained throughout the course.
