COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA Film program at Kent offers a structured approach to exploring both the theory and practice of cinema through a range of compulsory modules. Students begin by engaging with advanced topics in film studies, developing an in-depth understanding of critical debates and theoretical frameworks that shape contemporary film scholarship. Through modules such as Analysing Film and Concepts and Debates, they learn to critically evaluate cinematic texts, considering elements like narrative structure, visual style, and cultural context. Film Research Methods equips students with the practical and methodological skills necessary to conduct independent research, while Innovation and Writing encourages creative experimentation and the development of a personal analytical or practical voice. World Cinema History provides a global perspective, examining the historical evolution of cinema across different cultures and movements. The program culminates in the Film Dissertation, allowing students to pursue an extended research or practice-based project on a topic of their choice, synthesizing their learning and demonstrating expertise. Throughout the course, students balance rigorous academic study with opportunities for creative and applied engagement, preparing them for careers in film criticism, research, production, or further postgraduate study.
