COURSE CURRICULUM

The Physics degree at Kent equips students with a deep understanding of the fundamental principles governing the natural world, from subatomic particles to large-scale cosmic structures. In the first year, students build a strong foundation through modules in mathematics, mechanics, waves, fields, and quantum physics, alongside practical laboratory and programming skills that prepare them for experimental work. They also explore optics, astronomy, and relativity, gaining an appreciation for the breadth and relevance of physics. The second year expands this knowledge with advanced mathematical techniques, quantum and atomic physics, electromagnetism, and relativity, while offering practical experience through group laboratory projects and optional modules in observational astronomy, exoplanets, and spacecraft design. Students also engage with modern tools such as machine learning to analyse scientific data, reflecting the growing role of computational methods in physics. In the final year, the program focuses on specialised topics such as modern optics and photonics, thermal and statistical physics, condensed matter physics, and advanced laboratory investigation, with optional modules in medical physics and quantum computing and cryptography. Throughout the course, students develop problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills, combining theoretical understanding with practical experience. Graduates are well-prepared for careers in research, engineering, medical physics, aerospace, technology, and data-driven industries, or for further study in physics and related fields.
