COURSE CURRICULUM

The Physics with Astrophysics degree at Kent combines core physics study with specialised modules in astrophysics, giving students a comprehensive understanding of the fundamental laws of nature and the workings of the universe. In the first year, students build a strong foundation in mathematics, mechanics, waves, fields, and quantum principles, while exploring optics, astronomy, and relativity. Laboratory and programming modules develop practical skills and problem-solving abilities, essential for scientific investigation. The second year expands on these foundations with mathematical techniques, quantum and atomic physics, electromagnetism, and relativity, alongside observational astronomy and exoplanet study, allowing students to apply physics to real-world cosmic phenomena. Practical group projects and machine learning for natural sciences further develop analytical, computational, and collaborative skills. In the third year, students explore advanced topics such as modern optics and photonics, thermal and statistical physics, condensed matter physics, and astrophysics data analysis, with modules on stars, galaxies, and the universe providing hands-on observational and analytical experience. Across all years, students enhance transferable skills including critical thinking, communication, and data interpretation, preparing them for diverse careers. Graduates are well-equipped for roles in the space industry, technology, finance, research, and further academic study, combining scientific expertise with practical experience in both physics and astrophysics.
