COURSE CURRICULUM

The Mathematics degree at Kent offers a rigorous and applied approach to mathematical study across three years, combining core theory with practical experience and industry-relevant skills. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge through modules in principles of probability and statistics, linear algebra, calculus, mathematical structures and proofs, analysis, and mathematical modelling, while developing essential programming skills with R and Python. The second year extends this foundation with advanced study in optimisation for data analysis, mathematical statistics, multivariable and vector calculus, cryptography, number theory, numerical methods, and differential equations, alongside preparation for professional practice, equipping students with the analytical and technical skills demanded by employers. In the final year, compulsory modules in experience and research in mathematics, groups, fields and applications, complex analysis, and partial differential equations provide opportunities for independent study, research, and applied problem-solving. Optional modules allow students to specialise in emerging areas such as machine learning, deep learning, and financial economics and derivatives, connecting theoretical knowledge to real-world applications. Throughout the program, students gain critical thinking, programming, and quantitative analysis skills while learning to tackle complex problems.
