COURSE CURRICULUM

The joint honours Criminology and Sociology program at Kent provides a thorough understanding of crime, social structures, and the ways societies evolve and respond to challenges. In the first year, students develop a strong foundation through modules on the theories of crime and harm, fundamentals of sociology, criminology, classical sociological theory, developing a criminological imagination, and understanding society, equipping them with critical thinking and analytical skills. The second year builds on this foundation with compulsory modules in contemporary issues in criminology and criminal justice, contemporary sociological theory, and investigating social issues, while optional modules allow students to explore areas such as inequalities, digital society, computational social science, policing, crime history, restorative justice, prisons, migration, race and ethnicity, and globalisation, offering both theoretical and practical insights. In the final year, students focus on research and applied practice through modules such as applying social research, analysing real-world data, social and criminal justice practice, offender rehabilitation, technology and cybercrime, youth justice, protest and social change, environmental sociology, and specialised studies in sociology and criminology. The program develops strong research, analytical, and communication skills, preparing graduates for careers in the criminal justice system, social research, civil service, advocacy, and other roles where understanding and influencing society is essential, equipping them to effect meaningful social change.
