COURSE CURRICULUM

The Criminology and Criminal Justice program at Kent offers a thorough exploration of crime, its causes, and the ways it is managed and challenged in society. In the first year, students build a foundation through modules covering criminological theory, introduction to criminology, criminal justice, societal analysis, and career development, encouraging critical thinking and the development of a criminological imagination. The second year delves deeper into contemporary issues in criminology and criminal justice, investigating social issues and inequalities, while optional modules allow students to explore areas such as policing, prisons, restorative justice, digital society, migration, race and ethnicity, and historical perspectives on crime and punishment. This combination of core and elective modules equips students with both theoretical knowledge and practical insights into social and criminal justice challenges. In the final year, students undertake research-focused modules, including applying social research and optional modules covering technology and cybercrime, offender rehabilitation, drugs and crime, youth justice, violence, activism, and global sociological perspectives. Students can also engage in hands-on initiatives like the Inside-Out program, gaining practical experience in real-world contexts. Throughout the program, students develop analytical, research, and communication skills, leaving prepared for careers in the criminal justice system, civil service, social research, and related sectors, with the knowledge and practical experience to make a positive societal impact.
