COURSE CURRICULUM

The Space Science and Astronomy degree at Kent is carefully structured to combine core physics with specialist training in space-related fields, preparing students for a wide range of careers. In the first year, students build strong foundations in mathematics and physics through modules such as Mathematics I and II, Mechanics, and Introduction to Waves, Fields and the Quantum World. They also explore key concepts in astronomy and relativity, alongside practical training in Laboratory and Programming Skills, which develop essential computational and experimental abilities. The second year advances both theoretical and applied knowledge, with modules like Mathematical Techniques for Physical Sciences, Quantum and Atomic Physics, and Electromagnetism and Relativity. Students gain hands-on experience through a Physics Group Laboratory Project and specialized modules including Observational Astronomy and Exoplanets and Spacecraft Design and Operations, providing direct insight into real-world challenges in space science. In the final year, the focus shifts to advanced and specialized study with modules such as Modern Optics and Photonics, Thermal and Statistical Physics, Stars, Galaxies and the Universe, The Solar System, and Condensed Matter Physics. A dedicated module in Data Analysis and Investigation in Astronomy and Planetary Sciences ensures graduates leave with both deep scientific knowledge and transferable analytical skills.
