COURSE CURRICULUM

The biomedical engineering program at Kent combines engineering principles with biological and medical sciences to prepare students for careers in healthcare, research, and technology development. In the first year, students build a strong foundation in mathematics, electronics, programming, materials, and design while developing practical biomedical engineering skills. Hands-on projects such as the design and manufacturing project help students apply their learning and foster creativity and problem-solving. In the second year, the focus shifts to interdisciplinary applications, including biomechanics, image analysis, signal processing, and control systems, alongside anatomy and physiology. Students also gain experience working in teams through engineering projects, enhancing collaboration and project management skills highly valued by employers. The third year emphasizes advanced study and independent research, with compulsory modules covering medical dynamics, robotics and AI, biomaterials, and a research project that allows students to explore their interests in depth. Optional modules offer further specialization in areas such as embedded systems, advanced manufacturing, medical physics, cybersecurity, and the philosophy of cognitive science and AI. Throughout the program, students acquire both technical expertise and practical experience, developing problem-solving, analytical, and interdisciplinary skills. This prepares graduates to contribute to innovation in medical devices, healthcare technologies, and research, while equipping them with in-demand skills for a rapidly evolving industry.
