COURSE CURRICULUM

The Spatial and Interior Design degree at Kent provides a comprehensive journey through creative and technical development across three years. In the first year, students build foundational skills in design formation, visual communication, responsive and digital experimentation, sustainable design, and time-based media, developing a strong base for creative exploration. In the second year, the focus shifts to more applied and analytical work, including adaptive design, critical history, and design interventions that combine research, exploration, and practical implications. Students also gain technical knowledge through modules on building technology, light, and material, while considering career paths and professional development. The final year centers on advanced projects and independent research, allowing students to consolidate their skills and produce a significant body of work. Key components include the Big Project, which encompasses research, experimentation, and a capstone piece, as well as thesis research and a dissertation. Throughout the course, students are encouraged to integrate theory with practice, experiment with emerging technologies such as immersive media, and critically reflect on their design decisions. By the end of the degree, graduates emerge with a distinctive creative voice, a professional-standard portfolio, and the expertise to pursue careers in interior design, exhibition and experience design, or related spatial design industries.
