COURSE CURRICULUM

The Military History degree at Kent offers a comprehensive exploration of warfare and its impact on societies, politics, and culture across centuries. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge through compulsory modules such as understanding military history, battles in military history, redcoats: the British army and society, and the British army in the age of total war, while optional modules allow exploration of broader contexts including global empires, health and medicine, the Renaissance, and European conflicts. In the second year, students study pivotal periods through modules such as the modern world: revolution and crisis, armies at war 1914-1918, and the undergraduate dissertation, with optional modules covering topics like armoured warfare, civil wars, colonial conflicts, fascism, communism, and the Cold War, enabling students to analyse the social, political, and ethical dimensions of warfare in depth. The third year focuses on independent research through the dissertation, while optional modules allow specialisation in areas such as African American history, insurgency and counterinsurgency, medical ethics, cultural history of the Great War, the Hundred Years’ War, Napoleon, liberation struggles, and the global legacies of the Third Reich. Across all three years, students develop research, analytical, and critical thinking skills, gaining a nuanced understanding of military history and its enduring influence on modern societies, preparing them for careers in academia, heritage, policy, or related fields.
