COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA History program at Kent offers a broad and flexible curriculum across three years, combining core study with specialist options to provide a deep understanding of global, European, and British history. In the first year, students develop foundational knowledge through compulsory modules such as Controversial Histories and History Makers, alongside optional topics ranging from early and late medieval history to empire, modern Europe, and health and medicine. The second year introduces more focused study, with compulsory modules covering the medieval and modern worlds and dissertation planning, while optional modules allow exploration of military history, revolutions, American history, imperialism, environmental history, and social and cultural developments from the medieval period to the twentieth century. The final year culminates in an undergraduate dissertation, enabling students to undertake an independent research project, complemented by a wide range of optional modules including African American history, global insurgency, medical ethics, cultural history of war, Gothic art, mental health, and the legacies of conflict and empire. Throughout the program, students examine key themes such as war, diplomacy, power, social change, and identity, while developing critical research, analytical, and communication skills. This combination of historical knowledge and practical expertise prepares graduates for careers in research, education, heritage, public service, and beyond.
