COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Film and Media joint honours program offers a structured balance of theory, practice, and industry engagement across three years, equipping students with creative, analytical, and professional skills. In the first year, students build foundations through modules in film theory, media and meaning, film histories, and cultural and creative industries, alongside practical training in film and media production. The second year introduces more advanced study with compulsory modules in screenwriting, media ethics and social justice, and advanced media-making, while optional choices allow students to tailor their studies towards areas such as world cinema, social media, cinematography, sound and music, video gaming, film genre, and the intersection of media with social change, fashion, psychology, and disability studies. In the final year, students complete an independent industry project, offering valuable experience and enhancing employability, supported by optional modules in diverse areas such as film criticism, adaptation, marketing and distribution, microbudget filmmaking, factual entertainment, and specialist film studies. Further opportunities include placements, internships, or modules on fandom, media and sexuality, and celebrity culture. By combining critical engagement with hands-on practice, the program prepares graduates for careers in film, media, and creative industries, providing transferable skills and industry insights to succeed in a dynamic field.
