COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA English Literature program offers a rich and varied curriculum across three years, combining core literary study with opportunities to pursue specialist interests. In the first year, students are introduced to changing literatures, critical approaches, and themes such as dystopias, futures, and the relationship between literature and the environment, with options to explore issues of class, exclusion, and American power and protest. The second year builds on this foundation with compulsory modules on Shakespeare, world literatures in English, and the intersections of writing, displacement, and political action. Optional modules allow students to focus on areas such as American literature from the nineteenth century to the present, modernism, Victorian literature, the eighteenth-century novel, or premodern texts, providing both breadth and depth of study. In the final year, students complete an independent project while choosing from a wide range of advanced modules. These include explorations of feminist and queer literature, postcolonial and global narratives, mental health in literature, and thematic studies of genres such as the gothic, crime fiction, and war writing. With modules that connect literature to activism, politics, culture, and identity, the program develops critical insight and creativity, equipping students with strong analytical and interpretive skills for diverse careers.
