COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA English Literature with Creative Writing program offers students a carefully structured progression across three years, combining literary study with opportunities to develop as writers. In the first year, students explore the foundations of changing literatures, dystopias and imagined futures, critical approaches, and creative conversations, while also beginning to cultivate their own writing through a dedicated module on becoming a writer. Optional topics allow further engagement with themes such as class, belonging, and American political power. The second year deepens this blend of literature and creative practice with compulsory modules on poetry, fiction writing, and the relationship between literature, displacement, and political movements. Students may also choose from a wide range of literary modules spanning Shakespeare, world literatures, American modernities, premodern texts, Victorian literature, modernism, and the eighteenth-century novel. In the final year, students complete an independent project, highly valued for employability, alongside advanced optional modules. These cover themes such as feminism, queer writing, activism, postcolonial and global literature, gothic and crime fiction, Shakespeare and race, mental health, and cross-cultural narratives. Creative options include beginning a novel, writing creative non-fiction, or experimenting with lyric poetry. The program’s mix of critical analysis and creative expression equips graduates with both intellectual depth and practical skills for varied careers.
