COURSE CURRICULUM

The Classical Studies program at Kent provides a comprehensive exploration of the ancient world, combining history, archaeology, literature, philosophy, and cultural studies. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge through compulsory modules on the classical world, Roman history, archaeology, and Greek mythology, while optional modules allow exploration of topics such as ancient Egypt, migration, slavery, identity, and ancient languages, giving students the flexibility to follow their interests. In the second year, compulsory modules focus on the relevance of antiquity in the present and practical engagement through projects, while optional modules offer opportunities to study Greek and Roman art and architecture, Homeric epic, everyday life in the Roman Empire, fieldwork practice, museum studies, and topics on gender, sexuality, and imperialism, providing both academic and practical experience. The final year emphasizes independent research through a dissertation, with a wide range of optional modules allowing specialization in areas such as advanced ancient languages, archaeology, philosophy, classical history, religion, material culture, and heritage studies, including internships. Throughout the program, students gain critical thinking, research, analytical, and communication skills, while engaging directly with primary sources, archaeological methods, and cultural debates. Graduates leave equipped for careers in academia, heritage, museums, cultural management, and other fields where deep understanding of the ancient world is valued.
