COURSE CURRICULUM

The Ancient History degree at Kent offers a diverse and engaging curriculum that builds from foundational studies to advanced exploration of ancient societies. In the first year, students are introduced to core themes through compulsory modules such as Power and Persuasion: The Classical World, Classical Archaeology: Great Sites, Key Issues, Tyranny and Transformation: The Roman World, and Migration, Slavery and Identity in the Ancient World. These are complemented by optional modules like Classical Mythology, Ancient Egypt, Classical Literature, and Beginners’ Ancient Languages, providing a broad grounding in ancient cultures, texts, and archaeology. The second year encourages deeper engagement and practical experience with compulsory modules including Remaking the Past: Antiquity in the Present and The Engagement Project, alongside a wide selection of options such as Everyday Life in the Roman Empire, Greek and Roman Art and Architecture, Homeric Epic, Virgil’s Aeneid, and Museum or Heritage Studies internships. This allows students to combine academic study with valuable employability skills. In the final year, students undertake an independent Dissertation and can specialize further with advanced options such as Ancient Philosophy, The Hellenistic World, Roman Britain, Graeco-Roman Egypt, Constantinople and the Late Antique City, or Advanced Ancient Languages, ensuring both depth and flexibility in their studies.
