ABOUT UNIVERSITY
The University of Kent, originally known as the University of Kent at Canterbury (UKC), is a public research university established by Royal Charter on 4 January 1965, with Princess Marina, Duchess of Kent, as its first Chancellor. Its main campus is located on 300 acres of parkland north of Canterbury, housing over 6,000 students, alongside campuses in Medway and postgraduate centres in Paris. The university has an international outlook, drawing students from 158 countries, with 41% of academic staff from outside the UK. Kent’s origins date back to proposals in 1947 and formal approval in 1960, with the chosen site at Beverley Farm near Canterbury leading to its foundation. Initially envisioned as a collegiate and interdisciplinary institution, it opened in 1965 with four colleges—Darwin, Eliot, Keynes, and Rutherford—later joined by Woolf and Turing. The university grew quickly in the 1960s and 1970s but faced challenges, such as the 1974 collapse of a disused railway tunnel beneath the Cornwallis Building. Kent pioneered computing links in the UK during the 1970s and expanded teaching provision with centres in Tonbridge and later Medway. In the 2000s, the institution broadened internationally with postgraduate centres in Paris, Rome, and Athens. It rebranded in 2007 and set tuition fees at £9,000 in 2012. Recent developments include the Kent and Medway Medical School, opened in partnership with Canterbury Christ Church University, and major campus expansions such as the Jarman Arts Building, Colyer-Fergusson Music Building, Sibson Building, and an extended Templeman Library. Kent has produced two Nobel laureates in literature, Kazuo Ishiguro and Abdulrazak Gurnah. In 2022, it partnered with Kherson State University in Ukraine. Facing financial pressures, the university announced course cuts in 2024, leading to strikes and petitions. In September 2025, Kent revealed plans to merge with the University of Greenwich, forming the London and South East University Group while retaining distinct degree identities.
