COURSE CURRICULUM

This MSc program offers a comprehensive framework designed to equip students with the technical, managerial, and professional skills necessary to excel in the modern IT industry. At its core is the 60-credit MSc Project, which allows students to independently undertake a substantial investigation or development task aligned with their subject focus. This project serves both academic and professional purposes by fostering autonomy, critical thinking, and practical research or development capabilities. Core modules further support this foundation. Systems Design and Development enables students to grasp the software development lifecycle, while User Experience Design offers insights into creating interactive systems with a strong emphasis on usability and user-centred design. Project Management introduces essential methodologies and skills for planning and executing real-world projects. The Web and Intranet Content Management module develops the technical skills required to manage complex websites and internal systems using database and content management platforms. Additionally, the Essential Professional and Academic Skills for Masters Students module ensures learners are fully prepared for academic success and professional readiness. Students further personalise their learning by choosing 30 credits from a selection of optional modules. Options such as Managing IT Security and Risk, User Centred Web Engineering, and Software Quality Management offer depth in crucial areas like cybersecurity, front-end development, and systems governance. A second set of optional modules allows for further specialisation with courses like Systems Modelling, which teaches modelling tools such as UML and Soft Systems Methodology; Audit and Security, which focuses on IT auditing practices; Strategic IT, which links IT with organisational strategy; and Outsourcing and Organisational Awareness, which examines global outsourcing and its cultural implications. This carefully curated balance of theory, practical skills, and independent research provides a robust platform for students aiming for careers in software development, IT consultancy, systems analysis, cybersecurity, or further research at MPhil or PhD level.
