COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc course in Pharmaceutical and Formulation Science is designed to provide students with both theoretical knowledge and practical expertise across key areas relevant to modern pharmaceutical and consumer product industries. The Pharmaceutical and Formulation Science Research Project, worth 60 credits, is a central component that allows students to develop and apply practical research skills, including experimental design, scientific writing, data analysis, and critical thinking, while working independently on a project. Complementing this, the Formulation of Consumer Goods, Cosmetics and Coatings module focuses on creative problem-solving and teamwork, encouraging innovation in response to real-world formulation challenges while considering economic and environmental factors. The Colloids and Structured Materials module offers a mechanistic understanding of how colloids, polymers, and surfactants function in various industries, highlighting the importance of chemical interactions in multi-component systems. Academic support is provided through the Academic English for Postgraduates (Science) module, which helps international students develop strong academic communication skills, understand UK university conventions, and improve academic writing, referencing, and research techniques. The Analytical Methods and QA/QC Principles module develops students’ analytical and quality control skills, preparing them for roles in the pharmaceutical and related industries by emphasizing Valid Analytical Measurement and current industry practices. The Modern Pharmaceutical Processing & Active Ingredient Delivery module introduces students to key pharmaceutical processes, including conventional and emerging technologies for drug delivery, and encourages critical evaluation of these methods. Together, these modules ensure that graduates are equipped with a multidisciplinary understanding of formulation and pharmaceutical science, hands-on laboratory experience, and the professional skills needed to succeed in industrial or academic research settings. The course emphasizes both creativity and precision, preparing students for innovative roles in pharmaceutical development, quality assurance, and related sectors.
