COURSE CURRICULUM

This MSc Economics course provides students with a solid foundation in both theoretical and applied aspects of economic analysis, preparing them for advanced careers or further research. Core modules such as Macroeconomics 1 (15 credits) introduce competing schools of thought in macroeconomic policy, addressing global challenges like inequality, crises, and unemployment through various theoretical lenses including Keynesian, classical, and feminist economics. Microeconomics 1 (15 credits) offers a critical look at decision-making at the individual and firm level, covering contemporary theories and game theory. Introduction to Economic Analysis and Quantitative Methods (20 credits) and Applied Econometrics (30 credits) ensure students are well-versed in the mathematical, statistical, and empirical techniques necessary for rigorous economic analysis. These modules collectively support students in mastering data handling, hypothesis testing, and interpreting empirical findings within theoretical frameworks. The program culminates in a 10,000-word Dissertation (40 credits), where students conduct independent research, synthesize economic theories with real-world data, and generate policy-relevant conclusions. In addition to the core content, students personalize their learning through 60 credits of optional modules. These include Microeconomics 2 and Macroeconomics 2, which deepen theoretical and empirical understanding of micro- and macro-level economic dynamics, as well as specialized areas such as Economics of Finance and Investment, International Financial Markets, and Economics of Trade and Monetary Integration. There is also a strong focus on global development with modules like Economics of International Development, examining poverty, inequality, and structural transformation in the Global South. By integrating a diversity of economic approaches and real-world applications, the program not only cultivates critical thinking and analytical rigour but also equips students with the practical skills and intellectual flexibility needed to address complex economic problems in diverse contexts. Graduates leave with a comprehensive, globally-informed economic education grounded in theoretical diversity and empirical competence.
