COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc in Criminology and Criminal Psychology provides a comprehensive exploration of the psychological and criminological aspects of criminal behavior, law enforcement, and the criminal justice system. The course includes modules such as Social Forensic Psychology, which introduces students to the theories and practices involved in understanding criminal behavior and mental health, and Criminal Investigative Psychology, which focuses on the application of psychological research to improve police investigation methods and courtroom processes. The Psychology, Development and Crime module critically examines the psychological theories that underpin the development and persistence of criminal behavior, emphasizing the role of psychology in crime prevention and desistance. The program culminates in a 60-credit Criminology Postgraduate Dissertation, allowing students to conduct in-depth research on a criminological topic of their choice, applying the research skills and theoretical knowledge they have gained throughout the course. Other notable modules include Sexuality, Culture, and Criminality, which explores interdisciplinary issues at the intersection of gender, sexuality, and crime, and Comparative Criminological Research Methods, which develops students’ understanding of both qualitative and quantitative research methods used in criminology. The Crime Controversies and Critical Theory module engages students with contemporary issues and critical perspectives in criminology, encouraging them to critically evaluate the discipline’s conventional approaches. Throughout the course, students will develop essential skills for criminological research, critical analysis, and innovative problem-solving, preparing them for careers in academic, governmental, and criminal justice sectors.
