COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc in Biotechnology is designed to equip students with the scientific knowledge, technical skills, and research capability required to work at the forefront of the biotechnology industry or pursue further academic study. The program focuses on advanced molecular biology, bioinformatics, applied research, and the ethical and practical aspects of scientific investigation.At the core of the program is a 60-credit Biotechnology Research Project. This major independent project allows students to engage in innovative research, developing critical thinking, time management, and teamwork skills essential for careers in research and development.Key modules such as Applied Molecular Biology and Bioinformatics provide students with comprehensive knowledge of genetic coding, molecular interactions, and modern computational techniques. Students learn to use bioinformatics tools to explore genomic, transcriptomic, and proteomic data, and to analyse DNA/protein sequences and protein-drug interactions. These modules emphasise the integration of theory with hands-on experience, preparing students to interpret genetic data and apply it in clinical, pharmaceutical, or industrial settings.The Research Methods and Data Management module develops students' ability to design and manage scientific studies, apply biostatistics, and navigate ethical considerations in research. This foundational training in study design and data analysis supports students’ performance in their independent research projects.Academic English for Postgraduates (Science) helps international students strengthen their scientific communication skills, enabling them to succeed in academic writing and research presentation in a UK academic context.Students further specialise by choosing from optional modules such as Natural Product Biotechnology, which covers the drug discovery process and laboratory methods for exploring bioactive compounds, or Colloids and Structured Materials, which explores the role of physical chemistry in pharmaceutical and chemical product design.
