COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc in Data Science provides students with advanced knowledge and practical skills in data analysis, big data technologies, machine learning, and modern database systems. The program is designed to equip students with the technical expertise and problem-solving capabilities required to address real-world challenges in data-driven industries.Central to the program is the 60-credit MSc Project, where students independently design and carry out a significant piece of work related to their field, developing a research mindset and transferable skills such as project planning, problem-solving, critical thinking, and professional communication.Core modules focus on key areas of the data science field. Big Data, Applied Machine Learning, and Programming Fundamentals for Data Science provide foundational training in data handling, model development, and programming for analysis. Modules like Advanced Database Technologies and Graph and Modern Databases introduce students to relational and NoSQL systems, preparing them to manage and query complex datasets.Data Warehousing and Business Intelligence extends students' understanding of how structured data can be organised, cleaned, and interpreted for strategic decision-making, while Data Visualisation trains them to explore and communicate insights through effective visual representation. Ethical, legal, and professional issues related to the use of data and algorithms are also addressed.Optional modules allow for specialisation in areas such as User-Centred Web Engineering, Software Tools and Techniques, Systems Modelling, or Cloud and Grid Computing, enabling students to tailor the program to specific interests or industry goals.Graduates will be well-prepared for roles in data science, analytics, software engineering, or further research. The program balances technical depth with hands-on experience, ensuring readiness for both academic progression and high-demand industry positions in the evolving digital economy.
