COURSE CURRICULUM
The MPharm program is structured across four years, progressively developing knowledge and skills in biomedical sciences, pharmaceutical sciences, professional practice, and patient safety. In Year 1, students build foundational knowledge in cell biology, genetics, human anatomy and physiology, with an introduction to disease and therapeutics. They begin developing patient safety competencies through simulated and supervised real-world practice and are introduced to professional pharmacy practice, communication, legal frameworks, and pharmaceutical calculations. Students also explore pharmaceutical chemistry and pharmaceutics, focusing on drug synthesis and formulation. Year 2 deepens understanding of body systems and pathophysiology, focusing on diagnosis and evidence-based treatment strategies. Professional skills are refined through patient-centred care, clinical decision-making, and advanced pharmaceutical sciences, including drug stability and packaging interactions. In Year 3, students study the nervous system, cancer, infections, and immunity, linking these to pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments. They further develop their role in multidisciplinary care, emphasizing complex patient scenarios, pharmacogenetics, and prescribing decision-making. Pharmaceutical science advances are explored through drug delivery systems and gene-based medicines. Year 4 consolidates patient safety skills with complex case management and prepares students for professional transition. The Quality Use of Medicines module enhances understanding of medicine optimization in diverse populations, incorporating deprescribing, comorbidities, and social considerations. Students conduct an independent Master’s-level research project, applying knowledge and practical skills gained throughout the program. Finally, the Prescribing Scope of Practice module equips students with legal, ethical, pharmacological, and clinical competencies to prescribe safely and effectively within their professional scope, including remote and accountable prescribing. This integrated program ensures graduates are well-prepared for modern pharmacy practice, combining scientific expertise with patient-centred care and professional responsibility.
