COURSE CURRICULUM

This social work course is delivered over two years and combines academic study with the development of professional practice. In Year 1, students study core modules that build foundational knowledge and skills. Law and Social Work (20 credits) provides a critical understanding of the legal frameworks that guide social work practice. Human Growth and Development for Social Work Practice (20 credits) focuses on psychological theories and their relevance across the life cycle, helping students apply this understanding to real-world situations. Social Theories for Professional Practice (20 credits) examines key theoretical perspectives and models of intervention, encouraging students to evaluate their effectiveness in supporting service users and carers. Skills, Methods and Models of Social Work Practice (20 credits) helps students gain and critically apply theoretical approaches to practice while developing key professional skills in line with regulatory standards. Research Minded Evidence Based Practice (15 credits) introduces students to research methods and ethics, and the importance of evidence-based practice in shaping informed and effective social work.In Year 2, students continue to develop professional readiness. Policy, Politics and Change (10 credits) explores how personal, political, and organisational power shapes the context of social work and prepares students to respond critically to change. Transition Towards Professional Social Work Practice (10 credits) focuses on professional standards, autonomy, and employability as students prepare for their first social work role. Managing Risk, Complexity and Uncertainty (20 credits) offers advanced understanding of risk assessment, complex decision-making, and the influence of wider systems in work with children, adults, and families. The Social Work Dissertation (45 credits) gives students the opportunity to undertake an independent, literature-based research project. This module deepens their understanding of theoretical frameworks and encourages the use of research to inform and support social work practice, laying a foundation for future research and academic development.
