COURSE CURRICULUM

This course provides a comprehensive and interdisciplinary approach to the study of social and public policy, combining theoretical knowledge with practical research skills. Understanding Social and Public Policy (30 credits) introduces students to the foundations of policy analysis, exploring how policies are formed, implemented, and evaluated within different political and institutional contexts. Research Skills and Methods (30 credits) equips students with the tools needed to conduct rigorous policy research, including both qualitative and quantitative methods, ethical considerations, and effective data interpretation. Policy, Inequality and Society (30 credits) focuses on the relationship between policy and social inequality, examining how different groups experience the effects of public policy and the ways in which policies can either address or exacerbate social disparities. Law and Economics for Social and Public Policy (30 credits) explores the legal and economic principles that underpin policy-making, enabling students to understand the regulatory frameworks and economic dynamics that influence public policy decisions. The Dissertation/Research Project (60 credits) allows students to undertake an independent, in-depth study on a topic of their choice within the field, applying the research methods and theoretical perspectives gained throughout the course to produce a substantial piece of academic work. The program as a whole develops analytical, research, and critical thinking skills necessary for careers in policy development, public administration, research, and advocacy.
