COURSE CURRICULUM

This course provides a rigorous, practice-led approach to postgraduate study in sound and audiovisual arts, enabling students to develop advanced creative, technical, and theoretical expertise. Central to the program is the 60-credit Major Project – Practice Research, which runs throughout the academic year and allows students to design and realise an independent creative research project. This project culminates in both a written critical reflection and a public exhibition, encouraging students to articulate their creative processes within broader critical and theoretical frameworks. Supporting this, the Practice Research Cultures module explores a range of established and emerging methodologies in creative practice research, helping students situate their work within cultural, social, and disciplinary contexts and refine their research proposals aligned with professional standards. Contemporary Sonic Practices introduces a rich history and vocabulary of sonic arts and sound design, encouraging experimental and independent exploration through practice, while fostering a deeper understanding of 20th and 21st century sound cultures. Audiovisual Composition for Film, Games and Media expands students’ creative capacities by examining the interplay between sound and image, with a focus on sound design, editing, mixing, and advanced audio processing for visual media. For those looking to specialise in cutting-edge audio environments, the Spatial and Immersive Audio module provides in-depth training in surround sound formats, 3D audio capture, and multichannel sound diffusion. This module equips students with the knowledge to design immersive auditory experiences, which are increasingly relevant in fields such as virtual reality, gaming, and multimedia installations. Altogether, the course fosters a high level of creative independence, technical competence, and scholarly engagement, preparing students for careers in sound art, media production, research, or further academic study, with a strong emphasis on innovation and critical reflection in contemporary audio-visual practices.
