COURSE CURRICULUM

This MA Film course offers a comprehensive blend of theoretical knowledge and practical expertise, designed to prepare students for advanced work in the film industry and scholarly research in visual storytelling. Central to the program is the Film Major Project, a 60-credit capstone module where students apply all aspects of their learning to produce a significant film project accompanied by written documentation. This project demonstrates their understanding of the entire curriculum and challenges them to develop new skills, collaborations, and creative strategies. Complementing this is the Film Research Workshop, which strengthens students’ research capabilities and critical thinking through a focus on visual storytelling forms and film production workflows, enabling a scholarly foundation for both written and practice-based projects. The Cinematography and Production Practice modules delve into specific aspects of filmmaking, encouraging both technical skill development and theoretical analysis. Students explore the artistic and scientific dimensions of cinematography and investigate the historical and theoretical contexts of production through experimental practice and research-led workflows.The course also allows students to tailor their study by selecting 60 credits from a range of specialist options. Modules such as Directing Screen Performance and Editing offer focused training in core creative roles, enabling students to explore the history, theory, and professional execution of directing and post-production. Emerging Cinematography Practices and Post-Production Sound Design provide advanced instruction in new technologies and interdisciplinary techniques, preparing students for the dynamic demands of contemporary filmmaking. Screenwriting for the Short Form allows students to develop original scripts through theoretical inquiry and creative practice. This diverse range of modules fosters an environment where innovation, experimentation, and professional readiness are prioritized, giving students the tools to produce sophisticated and original work across the full spectrum of film production and scholarship.
