COURSE CURRICULUM

In this course, students engage with a combination of theoretical and practice-based modules that build toward the development of an independent creative project. The Expanded Art Forms module (30 credits) introduces students to experimental methodologies in audiovisual practice, encouraging work that goes beyond conventional frames. Through exploration of multi-screen projections, performance-based audiovisual work, projection mapping, and alternative surfaces, students are supported in blending multiple practices and media. This compressed Term One course runs alongside Research Methods in a Cultural Context (30 credits), which equips students with essential research skills specific to the creative industries, including those relevant to curatorial work and audience engagement. The course introduces practice-based research methodologies that students will continue applying throughout the program. Aesthetics and Practice (60 credits) spans Terms One and Two, offering a comprehensive lecture series featuring visiting artists and researchers, seminar discussions, and hands-on workshops. This module helps students contextualize their work within contemporary digital arts and provides opportunities to curate their own timetable of technical classes to deepen specific skills aligned with their artistic goals. Students are required to maintain a research blog, deliver a presentation, and submit a creative portfolio that reflects their engagement with the concepts and practices discussed. The course culminates in the Major Project (Digital Arts) module (60 credits), in which students develop a large-scale, research-informed creative work. Running through Term Three and the summer, the project is proposed in April and ultimately presented in a public exhibition in September. The module supports students in consolidating their practice, producing a significant body of work accompanied by critical documentation. Altogether, the program fosters the development of a distinctive creative voice underpinned by rigorous research, technical skill, and awareness of contemporary digital arts practices.
