COURSE CURRICULUM

This MSc program in TESOL and Second Language Learning and Teaching provides a comprehensive foundation in linguistic theory, teaching methodology, language acquisition, and applied research. It is designed for students aiming to advance professionally in English language education or pursue further academic research in applied linguistics or TESOL.At the core of the program are two major research components: Research Methods and the Dissertation. These modules guide students through the processes of designing and conducting original research, from hypothesis formation and methodology selection to data analysis and academic reporting. Students gain practical experience in research design and are supported in producing a substantial dissertation on a topic of their choice within TESOL or applied linguistics.Theoretical grounding is provided through modules such as Contemporary Theories in Second Language Acquisition and Syntax and Semantics, which develop students' understanding of language structure, meaning, and the cognitive processes involved in learning a second language. The Language Variation and Acquisition module explores how linguistic diversity influences learning, while also fostering skills in hypothesis testing and empirical analysis.Practical pedagogy is addressed in Key Issues in TESOL and Materials Development and Language Testing, which focus on classroom methods, assessment, syllabus design, and critical evaluation of teaching materials. These modules also encourage students to reflect on the global and socio-cultural dimensions of English language teaching.Additional breadth is provided through Perspectives on Translation, which introduces key concepts in translation theory and practice, offering insights into the interplay between language, culture, and communication.Altogether, the program balances theoretical insight, empirical research, and pedagogical practice, preparing graduates for careers in language education, curriculum design, assessment development, or further study at the doctoral level.
