COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Forensic Science program offers a well-rounded, interdisciplinary education that builds progressively across three years, combining core scientific principles with specialised forensic training. In Year 1, students develop a strong foundation through modules such as Exploring Forensic Science, which introduces key forensic principles and evidence handling techniques, and Concepts in Science, which covers essential scientific topics from atomic structure to ecosystems. Skills for Tomorrow’s Scientists and Practical Skills for Science focus on developing communication, mathematical, and laboratory skills necessary for academic and professional success. In Year 2, students build on this foundation with more focused modules including Intermediate Forensic Science, which enhances analytical and problem-solving skills through practical application, and Instrumental Analysis, which introduces key analytical techniques used in forensic investigations. Skills in Crime Scene Examination trains students in crime scene procedures and evidence recovery, while Genetics and Metabolism and Disease provide biological insights relevant to forensic contexts. The Research and Professional Skills module reinforces scientific investigation and employability. In Year 3, students undertake a significant research project in the Project (Chemical Sciences) module, applying their theoretical and practical knowledge to a chosen topic. Advanced Topics in Forensic Science deepens students’ understanding of the forensic process from evidence collection to courtroom presentation. A wide range of optional modules allows students to tailor their studies to specific interests and career goals, with topics including Forensic Anthropology and Archaeology, Digital Forensics, Advanced Instrumental Analysis, and Food Crime. These modules cover both emerging areas and established practices in forensic science. Students can also choose between a Science Internship or a Personal and Professional Development module to enhance their employability through real-world experience and career-focused training. Throughout the program, students gain critical thinking, laboratory competence, and communication skills essential for forensic science careers or further academic study.
