COURSE CURRICULUM
The Quantity Surveying course spans three years and is designed to provide students with comprehensive knowledge and practical skills required in the construction industry. In Year 1, students are introduced to key areas such as Construction Technology, which covers materials, sustainability, and building physics, along with Management and Economics of the Built Environment to understand the foundational business principles in construction. Project and Professional Skills prepare students for future careers by focusing on employability, while Quantity Surveying Practice 1 builds practical capabilities in land surveying, CAD, and cost estimation. Health, Safety and Wellbeing introduces students to legal and regulatory frameworks governing construction site safety, including real-world examples like the Grenfell Tower fire. Year 2 builds on these foundations with modules like Sustainable Construction and Integrated Project, focusing on mid-rise and large-span buildings. Quantity Surveying Practice 2 deepens industry-relevant skills, including cost control and communication. Measurement and Advanced Measurement strengthen core competencies in quantifying construction work using industry standards and interpreting technical drawings. Contract Practice Administration and Law introduces students to construction contract structures, legal obligations, and dispute resolution methods. In Year 3, students explore Project and Risk Management, enhancing leadership and risk assessment skills essential for large-scale projects. Construction Finance provides financial literacy tailored to construction contexts, while Quantity Surveying Practice 3 involves practical application through detailed project analysis. Commercial Management introduces tools like value engineering and whole-life costing to ensure cost-effective project delivery, alongside professionalism and ethics. The Research Practice and Dissertation module allows students to undertake an in-depth study of a specific construction issue, developing research and presentation skills. Construction Economics explores economic principles affecting the construction industry, integrating sustainability, government policy, and life-cycle costs. Collectively, this course equips students with the technical, managerial, and analytical skills to succeed as professional quantity surveyors in a dynamic and evolving sector.
