COURSE CURRICULUM

This mathematics and computer science degree provides a comprehensive and interdisciplinary foundation that integrates mathematical theory with practical computing skills, preparing students for advanced technical roles in industry or academia. In the first year, students develop core competencies in programming through the Paradigms of Programming module, which explores different programming styles and fosters adaptability across languages. Complementary modules in Algorithms and Data Structures, Vectors and Matrices, Calculus, Probability, and Data Analysis ensure a solid mathematical grounding essential for advanced computation and software development. By combining practical coding with mathematical theory, the course builds strong problem-solving capabilities. In the second year, the program advances to more complex software engineering concepts, including concurrent and distributed programming, use of design patterns, and essential tools like version control. This is supported by modules in Linear Algebra and Differential Equations, Vector Calculus, and Linear Programming, ensuring mathematical depth. Students also explore key areas like Artificial Intelligence and Information Security, equipping them with the knowledge to address contemporary technological challenges. The third year emphasises specialisation and application. Core modules in Machine Learning and AI Applications provide both theoretical insight and hands-on experience in building intelligent systems, while Coding and Cryptography highlights the relevance of mathematics in data security. Students then personalise their final year by choosing a major project, such as a Research Dissertation, a teaching placement through UAS, or an industry-based work placement, allowing them to apply their learning in real-world contexts. Additionally, a wide range of elective modules, including Natural Computing, Big Data Visualisation, Optimisation Techniques, and Graph Theory, offer flexibility to focus on cutting-edge topics. The curriculum’s emphasis on both theoretical rigour and applied skills ensures graduates are not only proficient in advanced mathematics and computing but also ready to solve real-world problems in evolving technological environments.
