The BSc in Forensic Science offers an interdisciplinary curriculum that integrates scientific principles with legal and criminological contexts, preparing students for diverse roles in forensic, scientific, and criminal justice sectors. In Year 1, students gain a broad foundation across the sciences and criminology. Modules such as Exploring Forensic Science introduce the principles and professional practices within forensic contexts, while Concepts in Science provides a grounding in essential scientific knowledge. Skills for Tomorrow’s Scientists equips students with core academic, numerical, and communication skills, and Foundations of Criminology introduces key theories of crime, criminality, and victimisation, setting a strong interdisciplinary base.In Year 2, the course deepens practical and theoretical knowledge. Intermediate Forensic Science develops analytical, problem-solving, and technical reporting skills through complex casework scenarios. Instrumental Analysis and Forensic Geoscience train students in applying scientific techniques to trace evidence and environmental investigation. Skills in Crime Scene Examination focuses on real-world application, teaching evidence recovery, legal considerations, and teamwork under investigative protocols. Criminological Perspectives encourages critical thinking by exploring the roles of justice agents and the sociopolitical dimensions of crime. Research and Professional Skills ensures students are prepared for rigorous scientific research and employment.Year 3 allows students to specialise and apply their learning. A substantial Project in Chemical Sciences gives students the opportunity to conduct independent research. Advanced Topics in Forensic Science builds critical thinking, casework evaluation, and knowledge of legal-scientific processes. Students tailor their learning further through option modules spanning forensic science, criminology, and professional development. These include technical areas such as Advanced Instrumental Analysis, Digital Forensics, and Chemometrics, alongside criminological topics such as The Psychology of Terrorism, Crime in the City, or Women, Power, Crime and Justice. Practical pathways like the Science Internship and the Forensic Anthropology and Archaeology module offer direct experience relevant to employment or postgraduate study.Throughout the program, students develop a well-rounded skill set in scientific analysis, legal knowledge, critical thinking, and communication. The degree is designed to prepare graduates for roles in forensic laboratories, law enforcement, analytical services, or further academic and professional training, including postgraduate study in forensic science or criminal justice.
