COURSE CURRICULUM

The Criminology with Psychology program offers an interdisciplinary exploration of crime, deviance, and psychological theory across three years. In Year 1, students complete four 30-credit core modules. Introduction to Psychology and Criminological Contexts introduces fundamental psychological paradigms and their relevance to criminological issues. Foundations of Criminology provides a grounding in key criminological theories and sociological concepts. Forensic Criminology explores crime scene investigation and forensic psychology, with an emphasis on analytical skills and ethical considerations. Understanding Deviance examines how social structures and inequalities relate to deviant and criminal behaviour, encouraging students to view crime in a wider social context. In Year 2, students build on this foundation through Criminological and Forensic Psychology, which applies psychological theories to criminal behaviour and mental health. Criminological Research Methods teaches practical skills in research design, data analysis, and academic writing, preparing students for independent research. Criminological Perspectives deepens theoretical understanding and encourages critical engagement with real-world criminal justice issues. Policing and Society offers insights into law enforcement and its role in modern society. In Year 3, all students complete Social and Investigative Forensic Psychology, which explores psychological approaches to investigation and includes guest lectures from professionals. Students then choose from a wide range of optional modules totaling 90 credits. These include practice-based options like Undergraduate Research Placement, Criminology and Work Based Practice, and the Dissertation Project, as well as theoretical modules such as Crime in the City, Women, Power, Crime and Justice, and Restorative Justice. Shorter 15-credit modules allow focused study on topics like terrorism, drugs, violence, and critical criminology. The course equips students with a combination of psychological insight, criminological knowledge, and practical experience, preparing them for careers in criminal justice, psychology, policy, and research.
