COURSE CURRICULUM

This construction management program offers a comprehensive and progressive curriculum designed to equip students with the technical, managerial, and legal knowledge required for successful careers in the construction industry. In the first year, students gain foundational knowledge in construction technology, understanding how domestic and simple commercial buildings are constructed with attention to sustainability, materials, and environmental performance. Modules such as Health, Safety and Wellbeing and Project and Professional Skills prepare students for industry standards and professional expectations. They are also introduced to the basic principles of management and economics in the built environment, as well as the construction lifecycle through the Construction Management Practice module. In the second year, the curriculum advances to more complex topics, including medium-rise and larger span construction, financial and contract planning, and structural design principles. Students also explore refurbishment techniques for existing structures and develop a working understanding of construction contract law and administration. This middle year places emphasis on integrating sustainability into projects and introduces students to practical elements of tendering, measurement, and cost control. By the final year, students are prepared to specialize and take on leadership-level competencies. Modules like Project and Risk Management and Design and Construction Management focus on developing strategic thinking, risk assessment, resource coordination, and design evaluation. A key element is the Research Practice and Dissertation module, where students conduct an in-depth investigation into a chosen area of construction. Further professional competencies are enhanced in Construction Management Practice 3 through the integration of digital tools like Building Information Modelling (BIM). The final modules, Construction Economics and Construction Contract Law, round out the program with economic evaluation techniques and a deep dive into legal frameworks, collaboration strategies, and dispute resolution. Overall, the program balances technical skills, managerial acumen, and legal literacy to develop competent construction professionals ready for a dynamic and evolving industry.
