COURSE CURRICULUM

This civil engineering program offers a comprehensive educational journey through progressive modules spanning surveying, design, fluid and soil mechanics, and environmental and structural engineering, tailored to meet both academic and industry expectations. In Year 1, students are introduced to essential engineering principles and tools, including surveying and CAD for spatial analysis and technical drawing, foundational knowledge in solid and fluid mechanics, and mathematics that underpins all engineering analysis. The Design and Materials module plays a central role, merging theory with practical skills through group-based projects that build students' ability to work collaboratively and communicate effectively—crucial skills for any aspiring engineer. Professional and ethical awareness is also nurtured early, promoting responsibility and contextual understanding of engineering's impact. Year 2 shifts focus toward applied civil engineering knowledge, where students explore the complexity of construction management, hydraulics, and structural design. The Environment and Earth Materials module deepens their understanding of geological and environmental challenges, integrating sustainability with engineering applications. Students also undertake the Sustainable Construction and Integrated Project, applying classroom knowledge to real-world scenarios involving mid-rise and long-span structures. Through a mix of theoretical lectures, hands-on laboratory work, and collaborative projects, they enhance their problem-solving skills while developing an appreciation for sustainability in construction practices. Mathematics remains an integral part of the curriculum, reinforcing quantitative reasoning and analytical capabilities. In Year 3, students specialise and consolidate their learning, engaging with advanced topics such as Geotechnical and Water Engineering, and adopting critical design roles through the Group Design Project and Final Year Project. These modules promote independence, creativity, and deeper technical insight, enabling students to apply FEM modelling, Eurocodes, and CFD tools in design and risk management. The inclusion of the Engineering Professional Practice module ensures students are industry-ready, with a solid grasp of professional standards, leadership, and regulatory expectations aligned with IEng and CEng pathways. The final Design and Structures 2 module combines all prior learning into a capstone design experience, equipping graduates with the holistic, interdisciplinary skills necessary for modern civil engineering practice.
