COURSE CURRICULUM

The Sport and Exercise Science degree offers a multidisciplinary approach to understanding human performance, health, and wellbeing. In Year 1, students develop foundational knowledge through modules like Functional Anatomy & Biomechanics 1, Human Physiology, and Human Movement 1 and 2, which introduce body systems, movement patterns, and biomechanical principles. The physiological basis of performance is explored alongside Introduction to Sport Psychology, while academic and digital skills, along with research methods, support students' readiness for further study. In Year 2, core modules deepen understanding across key areas such as Sport and Exercise Physiology, Nutrition, Psychology, and Functional Anatomy & Biomechanics 2, including 2D and 3D movement analysis. Students gain practical experience in Exercise Testing and Training, and engage with Applied Performance Analysis using tools like GPS. Interdisciplinary Practice and Research Methods prepare students to integrate knowledge across disciplines and design ethically sound research. In Year 3, all students complete an Independent Research Project (30 credits), applying theory and practical expertise to a chosen area of interest. The remaining 90 credits are selected from optional modules that support specialisation. Topics include Muscle Physiology, Applied Nutrition, Sport Injury Prevention, and Teaching Physical Education, allowing students to tailor their path toward clinical, educational, or athletic performance contexts. Other modules like Applied Physiology for Strength and Conditioning and Current Issues in Sport & Exercise Psychology address real-world coaching and mental health concerns. Exercise, Health and Wellbeing fosters an inclusive understanding of physical activity’s role in disease prevention and mental wellbeing. Throughout the degree, emphasis is placed on scientific research, practical application, and understanding diverse populations. This ensures graduates are well-prepared for careers in sports science, coaching, health promotion, or further study in specialist fields.
