COURSE CURRICULUM

The Physical Education and Sport program develops students’ academic, practical, and professional competencies through a blend of theoretical and applied learning. In Year 1, students gain foundational knowledge and skills in academic writing, research, critical thinking, time management, and personal development. Modules cover human physiology, introductory sport psychology, sociological issues in sport, and the historical and contemporary development of PE and sport in the UK. Students begin to acquire practical teaching skills and engage with inclusive strategies through hands-on physical activity modules. In Year 2, students further their understanding of performance analysis in dance, gymnastics, outdoor and adventurous activities, games, athletics, and aquatics. They also explore physiological responses to exercise, sport injury prevention, and contemporary issues influencing participation. A strong emphasis is placed on research skills and sociological perspectives to encourage critical thinking. Students investigate sport and exercise psychology, including group dynamics and performance environments. In Year 3, students complete core modules in independent research and performance enhancement, developing autonomy, critical evaluation, and professional competencies. They can tailor their learning through a variety of optional modules such as Teaching PE, Sport Policy and Development, Sport Injury Prevention, Exercise and Wellbeing, and Coaching Award Reflection. Options allow students to explore diverse interests, including psychological and sociological aspects of sport, global sport policy, injury rehabilitation, and health promotion. The structure promotes personal choice and specialisation, encouraging students to apply theory in real-world and professional contexts. Across all three years, the program integrates academic development with practical experience, research capability, and employability skills, preparing graduates for careers in education, coaching, health and fitness, and sport development, as well as further study in related fields.
