COURSE CURRICULUM

The International Relations degree is structured to provide a strong foundation in the first year, critical skill development in the second, and specialised, career-focused learning in the third. Year 1 introduces key concepts and debates in global politics through two core modules: Introduction to International Relations and Global Issues. These equip students with essential theoretical tools and foster analytical and communication skills. A wide range of optional modules allows students to explore political history, media, language, and society. Language study in French, Spanish, Mandarin, or Italian also offers early cultural and linguistic immersion. In Year 2, students deepen their understanding with two compulsory modules: Approaches to Development and Applied Politics and International Relations. These focus on development theory and the application of political knowledge in real-world contexts. Students learn to analyse policy, reflect on global inequalities, and develop practical research skills. Optional modules further tailor the degree, with choices ranging from journalism and political philosophy to advanced language study and research projects. Students interested in careers in international development, media, or policy will find this year particularly relevant, with the flexibility to combine theoretical depth with applied learning.Year 3 builds on this foundation by exploring the intersection of politics, language, and diplomacy. The core modules, Language, Soft Power and Cultural Diplomacy and International Relations and International Security, offer critical insights into how language functions in international power dynamics and how global security is theorised and practised. Optional modules support a range of interests. Language modules continue to develop communication skills, while the dissertation and research project options enable independent, in-depth study. Applied modules in journalism, linguistics, or work placement enhance employability and practical experience. The curriculum also addresses global issues like migration and globalisation, encouraging critical reflection on contemporary challenges.Together, the three years prepare students for diverse careers in diplomacy, policy, media, education, and international organisations.
