COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Landscape Architecture degree provides a structured and immersive journey through the cultural, technical, historical, and practical dimensions of landscape design. In Year 1, students are introduced to foundational principles with modules like Cultural Contexts of Architecture, where they examine the societal and ideological influences on the built environment, and Landscape Design 1, which is divided into Site Investigation and Experimentation, encouraging analytical thinking and creative exploration through site-specific studies and representational techniques. Complementary modules such as Landscape Design Technology and History of Architecture and Landscape help students begin linking design with material, ecological, and historical understanding. Year 2 builds on this base with deeper engagement in practice and theory. In Landscape Design 2, students critically explore urban ecologies and develop projects with a strong focus on urban strategy and resolution. Contemporary Theories of Landscape equips students with conceptual tools to interrogate political, cultural, and ecological contexts, while modules like Introducing Architecture & Landscape Practice and Design Technology 2 help integrate professional knowledge with studio work. Historical understanding is extended through the study of modernism and critical architectural developments from 1750 onward. In Year 3, students develop independent research and design capabilities at an advanced level. The Landscape Dissertation allows students to explore a focused topic, demonstrating critical research and writing skills. Landscape Design 3 involves complex site investigations, where students apply their cumulative knowledge to address territorial, environmental, and social issues, culminating in a refined, professionally presented portfolio. The final Design Technology module broadens their technical scope to infrastructural scales, linking detail and large-scale systems like transportation and planning. This program effectively balances creative practice with theoretical and technical rigor, preparing graduates for a responsive, thoughtful, and professionally grounded career in landscape architecture.
