COURSE CURRICULUM
The BA History degree at Greenwich is structured to build a solid foundation in historical knowledge and analytical skills, while offering flexibility to pursue specific interests. In Year 1, students take three core modules covering historical methods, the global nineteenth century, and British imperial history, then choose an optional 30-credit module. Options include modern languages (French, Spanish, Italian, or Mandarin), literature, politics, or sociology, allowing students to begin specialising early. Year 2 includes one compulsory module focused on historical practice and research skills, alongside three sets of optional modules totalling 90 credits. These include thematic 15-credit history modules such as global conflict, genocide, environmental history, and empire, as well as broader 30-credit options in language, literature, or social sciences. Students can continue with languages from Year 1 or take up new interdisciplinary subjects. In Year 3, students choose between a 30-credit dissertation or a work placement to develop either academic research or professional experience. They then select three further option sets, choosing from in-depth 15-credit history topics like the Ottoman Empire, gender and defiance in North America and Britain, environmental history, the slave trade, film and propaganda, or early modern food culture. Additional 30-credit options include advanced language study, political theory, and literature modules. This final year is designed to support both specialisation and application of knowledge. The structure encourages students to develop regional or thematic expertise, practical skills, or language fluency, depending on their career goals. Those interested in postgraduate study may choose a research-led route, while others may pursue a professional pathway through placements or interdisciplinary modules. Throughout, students can tailor their degree to reflect interests in empire, social justice, culture, politics, or the environment, building a personalised academic journey supported by rigorous training and a wide range of choices.
